CHAPTER 39

A Busy Morning in London

It is 8:15 AM on a rainy Tuesday. Monika meets Mei at the entrance of the busy Oxford Circus station.

The station announcement warns of major roadworks nearby. They hurry toward platform 4 to catch the Central Line train.

The platform is very crowded. Monika tells Mei that she has received her latest payslip from the employer.

Mei asks about the deductions on the document. Monika explains that the payment includes the income tax and the National Insurance.

The train arrives at 8:22 AM. They push into the carriage, which costs 3.50 pounds for a single journey.

Monika mentions that the tax helps fund the local hospital. She has a doctor appointment scheduled for next Friday at 2:00 PM.

Mei checks her phone for the official government update. She confirms that the National Insurance is mandatory for all workers.

The tube stops suddenly due to a signal failure. The passengers wait patiently while the driver makes an apology.

They discuss their monthly budget while the train starts moving again. Monika saves money for a nice dinner at a Thai restaurant.

The train reaches the destination at 8:50 AM. They leave the station and walk quickly to their office in the city.
