CHAPTER 95

Sakuras London Commute and Tax Troubles

It was Monday, 7:30 AM. Sakura rushed to the Tube station. The weather was drizzly. She needed to catch the 7:45 AM train.

The platform was crowded, people jostled for space. An announcement warned of delays on the Northern Line due to urgent track repairs.

Sakura checked her Oyster card balance. It had £15.50. She hoped it was enough for her journey to the office in zone 1.

She boarded the train at 7:50 AM. It was packed. She stood near the doors, clutching her work bag tightly. The train departed.

At the office, Markus greeted her. He asked about her commute. Sakura mentioned the roadworks near her flat.

Markus explained his new salary slip. He said, "My net pay is lower because of income tax and National Insurance contributions."

He pointed to the document. "The tax code is 1257L. The NI category is A. The tax year started on 6 April."

Sakura looked at her own payslip. She saw a deduction for "PAYE" and "NI". She felt confused about the percentages.

Markus offered to help. He said, "We pay tax on earnings over the personal allowance, around £12,570 a year."

He added, "National Insurance helps fund state benefits. It’s a percentage of your earnings above a certain threshold."
