Akkusativ: den and einen

The subject doing the action is in the Nominative case. The object receiving the action (whom? what?) is in the Accusative case. Good news: In the Accusative, only masculine (der) words change.

In this lesson

1. Whom? What?

The object takes the Akkusativ case.

Ich kaufe den Tisch.
I am buying the table.
2. Only der changes

der → den, ein → einen, kein → keinen. die, das, and plural stay the same.

3. Verbs taking Akkusativ

haben, brauchen, kaufen, möchten, sehen, suchen, nehmen, essen, trinken...

Ich brauche einen Termin.
I need an appointment.
4. es gibt + Akk

The standard way to say 'there is / there are'.

Es gibt einen Park hier.
There is a park here.
5. Pronouns

mich, dich, ihn, sie, es, uns, euch, sie/Sie.

Ich liebe dich.
I love you.
💡 When in doubt, ask yourself: Is this word masculine and is it the object in the sentence? If both are yes → den / einen. Otherwise, nothing changes.
