A1 · GRAMMAR

Articles: der, die, das

In English, nouns do not have grammatical gender, but in German, every noun has a gender: masculine (der), feminine (die), or neutral (das). This gender is often not logical and must be memorized. Therefore, the most important habit is to always learn a word together with its article.

In this lesson

1. Three articles

der (masculine), die (feminine), das (neutral).

der Tisch · die Lampe · das Buch
table · lamp · book
2. Indefinite article

One / mentioned for the first time: ein (for der, das), eine (for die).

Das ist ein Tisch.
This is a table.
3. Plural

In the plural, the article is always die.

die Tische · die Bücher
tables · books
4. Tips

-ung, -heit, -keit, -ion → die. -chen → das.

die Zeitung · das Mädchen
newspaper · girl
5. Capitalization

In German, all nouns begin with a capital letter.

💡 Keep your vocabulary list with articles and color-code them: der blue, die red, das green. Visual memory is very helpful.
