Verb conjugation (Präsens) and haben

In German, verbs take endings according to the subject, similar to English verb forms (like adding -s for he/she/it). The rule is simple: drop -en from the infinitive to find the stem, then add the personal ending. The Präsens (present tense) covers both 'I am doing' and 'I do'; German doesn't have a separate tense just for '-ing'.

In this lesson

1. Stem + ending

wohnen → wohn → ich wohne, du wohnst, er wohnt.

Ich wohne in München.
I live in Munich.
2. Endings

ich -e, du -st, er -t, wir -en, ihr -t, sie -en.

3. One tense, two meanings

Präsens = simple present + present continuous.

Ich lerne Deutsch.
I am learning German / I learn German.
4. Special stems

If the stem ends in -t/-d, add an e: du arbeitest. If it ends in -s/-ß/-z, just add t for du: du heißt.

5. haben = to have

ich habe, du hast, er hat.

Ich habe zwei Kinder.
I have two children.
💡 wir and sie/Sie forms are always the same as the infinitive: wir wohnen, sie wohnen. The main three forms you need to memorize: ich, du, er.
