Where, Where to, Where from?

In German, prepositions are used to indicate location, direction, and origin. The question word helps you choose the correct preposition: Woher? (Where from?) → aus, von. Wohin? (Where to?) → nach, zu, in. Wo? (Where?) → in, bei. After these prepositions, the article often changes to Dative: zu dem → zum, bei dem → beim.

In this lesson

1. Woher? → aus

Country, city: aus.

Ich komme aus der Türkei.
I come from Turkey.
2. Wohin? → nach / zu / in

nach + city/country, zu + person/institution, in + country/place with an article.

Ich gehe zum Arzt.
I am going to the doctor.
3. Wo? → in / bei

in + city/place, bei + person/company.

Ich arbeite bei BMW.
I work at BMW.
4. nach Hause / zu Hause

nach Hause = home (direction), zu Hause = at home (location).

5. Abbreviations

zu dem → zum, zu der → zur, bei dem → beim, in dem → im.

💡 First, determine the question: Where to, where, or where from? The preposition will then come easily.
