Reflexive verbs (sich)

Some verbs are used with a reflexive pronoun that refers back to the subject: sich waschen (to wash oneself), sich freuen (to be glad). In German, you need a separate pronoun for this: mich, dich, sich...

In this lesson

1. Pronouns

mich, dich, sich, uns, euch, sich.

Ich freue mich.
I am happy.
2. Common verbs

sich freuen, sich beeilen, sich ausruhen, sich anziehen, sich treffen, sich setzen, sich fühlen.

3. English tip

Often equivalent to English verbs where you do the action to yourself (e.g., wash oneself, hurry, sit down).

4. mir / dir

If there is another direct object, the pronoun is in the Dative: Ich wasche mir die Hände.

Ich putze mir die Zähne.
I am brushing my teeth.
💡 For er, sie, es and sie/Sie, the pronoun is always sich. The normal accusative pronouns (mich, dich, uns, euch) are only used for ich, du, wir, ihr.
