Akkusativ and Dativ prepositions

Some prepositions always take the same case. Memorizing them in groups is the easiest way: Akkusativ prepositions (für, um, durch, gegen, ohne) and Dativ prepositions (aus, bei, mit, nach, seit, von, zu, gegenüber). Seeing the preposition makes the article automatically clear.

In this lesson

1. Akkusativ prepositions

für, um, durch, gegen, ohne → always Akk.

Das ist für dich.
This is for you.
2. Dativ prepositions

aus, bei, mit, nach, seit, von, zu, gegenüber → always Dativ.

Ich fahre mit dem Bus.
I am going by bus.
3. Contractions

zu dem → zum, zu der → zur, bei dem → beim, von dem → vom.

4. seit or vor?

seit = since (ongoing), vor = ago (finished).

Ich wohne seit 3 Jahren hier.
I have been living here for 3 years.
💡 Memory trick: For Akkusativ use FUDGO (Für, Um, Durch, Gegen, Ohne). For Dativ, chant the prepositions like a song: aus, bei, mit, nach, seit, von, zu.
