Two-way prepositions (Wechselpräpositionen)

Nine prepositions can take either the Dative or Accusative case: an, auf, hinter, in, neben, über, unter, vor, zwischen. The question decides which one to use: Wo? (where, location) → Dative. Wohin? (where to, movement/direction) → Accusative.

In this lesson

1. Nine prepositions

an, auf, hinter, in, neben, über, unter, vor, zwischen.

2. Wo? → Dative

Location, no movement (answering 'where').

Das Buch liegt auf dem Tisch.
The book is lying on the table.
3. Wohin? → Accusative

Movement, direction (answering 'where to').

Ich lege das Buch auf den Tisch.
I am putting the book on the table.
4. Verb pairs

liegen/legen, stehen/stellen, sitzen/setzen, hängen/hängen.

5. Contractions

in dem → im, an dem → am, in das → ins, an das → ans.

💡 Ask yourself: Is it a fixed location or movement? Location (at rest) → Dative. Movement (to a place) → Accusative.
