Past Konjunktiv II: hätte gemacht, wäre gegangen

In A2 you learned 'Wenn ich Zeit hätte, würde ich kommen'. For unreal past situations, we use hätte / wäre + Partizip II: 'Wenn ich das gewusst hätte, wäre ich gekommen'. Regrets and 'if only' wishes are also expressed with this structure.

1. Structure

hätte / wäre + Partizip II.

Ich hätte dich angerufen.

I would have called you (but I didn't).

2. haben or sein?

The auxiliary choice follows the Perfekt: gegangen → wäre, gemacht → hätte.

3. Condition

Wenn ... hätte/wäre + P.II, hätte/wäre ... P.II.

Wenn ich das gewusst hätte, wäre ich gekommen.

If I had known that, I would have come.

4. If only / Regret

Wenn ich nur ... / Hätte ich doch ...

Hätte ich doch mehr gelernt!

If only I had studied more!

5. With modals

hätte + infinitive + modal infinitive: Ich hätte früher kommen sollen.

Ich hätte früher kommen sollen.

I should have come earlier.
